ABOUT THE MAKER

Miguel Faria Leal was born in Beira, Mozambique and re-located with his family to Johannesburg, South Africa at the age of 15.

Miguel started his working life as an apprentice millwright with a large metallurgical company and on completion of his apprenticeship transferred to a drawing office as a trainee mechanical draughtsman. Currently Miguel manages the engineering drawing office at a multi-national company.

While at technical college a classmate introduced him to the art of knife making and the desire to take up this art form was born.
In 2012 Miguel finally embarked on his knife making journey and began making mostly hunting knives by employing the stock removal method which he still uses to this day.  More recently Miguel started making folding knives and in the near future some new and exciting designs shall be making an appearance on his products page

Apart from having a passion for designing and making knives, Miguel is a keen motorcycle rider who has a passion for fast machines and motorsport. He has also developed an interest in the art of photography and in particular photographing African wild life.

QUALITY TESTED

All MFL Knives are hand crafted from high quality materials. All blades undergo a stringent heat treatment and tempering process which is followed by individual hardness testing. Depending on the steel used, all blades will have to meet values of between 58 and 63 on the Rockwell C hardness scale.

The Dobermann Pinscher is well known not only for its elegant looks but also for its loyal, fierce and protective nature. Having been Miguel’s favourite canine companions over the years, it stands to reason that this beautiful animal’s silhouette would have been the first choice as a symbol to adorn and represent his knives.
